The Film

Tonos is about finding your voice when you've spent your whole life being spoken for.

Tonos follows a timid singer who, visited after many years by her childhood best friend, is forced to finally confront the fact that people have spoken on her behalf her entire life.

The film opens with flashbacks of Athenea's childhood, narrated by her best friend Alberto: she speaks to animals more than to people, she is passionate about music but too shy to share it. Alberto always speaks for her. They are inseparable, until their teachers separate them into different classes.

In the present day, Athenea moves to London hoping to find her voice and leave the comfort of her old life behind. As she tries to meet new people and gain agency, she still fails to speak up. In a low moment of desperation, Alberto reappears as a complete surprise, in town for a music concert, and about to drag her on an adventure that will change her life.

As funny, charismatic and witty as ever, Alberto accidentally reopens childhood wounds and pushes her to let go of their childhood bond. She finds her own, unconventional way of speaking: music.

A film that gives weight to the small but significant moments: a moment where a woman is made to feel small, and decides to reclaim her agency.

Director's Vision

This film is personal. It's about the voice I lost as a child and the years it took to find it again. It's about the small creatures I kept close by and about my best friend Alejandro who would speak for me until teachers separated us into different classes.

Young Coro with a lamb on the farm

I've directed teams of 40 on micro budgets. Tonos is my most ambitious film so far.

Where Does Tonos Come From?

The story behind the film.

A woman in silhouette against a curtain

As a young woman, I've been praised for my silence many times. It gave mystery to my personality, maybe even made me more attractive. For me, it felt like a cage.

This movie is my way to encourage other young girls to trust their voice, to speak up. I want them to live their way too, unscripted. To create, to be bold, entrepreneurs, singers, to express. Being all the things society asks us to be is impossible, but perhaps we can just 'be', with our own and unique voices. Now, I still have the temptation to remain quiet, but I take the risk every day.
