Tonos is about finding your voice when you've spent your whole life being spoken for.
Tonos follows a timid singer who, visited after many years by her childhood best friend, is forced to finally confront the fact that people have spoken on her behalf her entire life.
The film opens with flashbacks of Athenea's childhood, narrated by her best friend Alberto: she speaks to animals more than to people, she is passionate about music but too shy to share it. Alberto always speaks for her. They are inseparable, until their teachers separate them into different classes.
In the present day, Athenea moves to London hoping to find her voice and leave the comfort of her old life behind. As she tries to meet new people and gain agency, she still fails to speak up. In a low moment of desperation, Alberto reappears as a complete surprise, in town for a music concert, and about to drag her on an adventure that will change her life.
As funny, charismatic and witty as ever, Alberto accidentally reopens childhood wounds and pushes her to let go of their childhood bond. She finds her own, unconventional way of speaking: music.
A film that gives weight to the small but significant moments: a moment where a woman is made to feel small, and decides to reclaim her agency.
